„Was kostet eigentlich ein Völkermord?“ – Namibia, Deutschland und die Frage nach Reparationen für koloniale Gewalt
In 2015, the German federal government and the Namibian government began negotiations on a political agreement on the genocide of the OvaHerero and Nama in the former colony of German South-West Africa. However, the agreement, which has not yet been signed, has met with Descendants of the affected communities. The exclusion of the affected associations from the negotiation process is criticised in particular - as is the early decision by the German side not to pay any reparations.
At the same time, the international debate on reparations is gaining momentum: the African Union has chosen "Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations" as its motto for 2025. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is also calling for concrete measures to make amends for colonial violence and enslavement with its own Reparations Commission. But what exactly can or should reparations for colonial injustice actually look like?
In the workshop, we will take a critical look at the German-Namibian "reconciliation process", get to know different voices from the reparations debate and discuss together: What does just reparation mean?
