AI & labour in the colonial relationship
Artificial intelligence (AI) is finding its way into more and more areas of work. Be it in the form of support in simple work steps, the control of machines and people or even the complete replacement of jobs for which people are no longer needed. A common feature of the use of AI worldwide is that it is also being used as a tool to exploit workers. However, while tech companies from the global North benefit, the greatest costs of AI are borne by the global South, especially former colonies. AI does not run itself. In addition to the exploitation of resources and destruction of the environment in the global South, people in particular are recruited as poorly paid and precarious labour. They train the AI models and look at what no worker would be willing to look at without coercion.
In this workshop, we will teach the basics of AI & labour in the context of digital colonialism. In addition to an input, we will work in small groups on in-depth questions.
Activists from the Global South and Germany will then present their views on the topic to the well-prepared participants and report on resistance practices.
