Who is travelling where? Why? And with what images in their heads and privileges in their luggage? Tourism is an unequal field. Not only in terms of the serious climate impact of global air travel or waste and water consumption, for example, but also in terms of neo-colonial continuities. Who owns the hotels, which companies earn money from tourists? What freedom of travel comes with which passport?

Last but not least, travel to formerly colonised countries is booming. However, the shared past does not play a role for most tourists.

The example of Tanzania makes it clear that historical tourism could play a role in coming to terms with the past together. Museums or city tours show colonial traces and teach about resistance and resilience. In this way, a long-distance trip can become a learning journey - beyond the clichés about romantic sunsets in Zanzibar and wild animals in the Serengeti.
